In case you missed it, last month I announced on Instagram I was once again going to participate in the One Room Challenge (remember the nursery transformation from our Spring One Room Challenge?)! Now that was a fun one.

The One Room Challenge, which happens each April and October, is a wonderful community of support that comes together to celebrate the process of a transformation – the creativity, inspiration and struggles that are all a part of these projects.

So, which room did I choose this round?

I have chosen, somewhat spontaneously, to re-do our master bedroom and it has been a long time coming.

Up until TODAY – yes, today – I was going to be focusing on our guest bedroom. However, I had some sort of anxiety attack/moment of clarity last night while trying to fall asleep. Why does it always have to happen when you are already trying to fall asleep?

Our guest room is like a revolving project room – it, in and of itself, is actually an unfinished project. It’s time will come. However, I did a little cost/benefit analysis and determined that it would be a little more cost effective to work on our master bedroom. Plus, then we could actually enjoy our transformation instead of it sit in a typically empty room.

Here is a picture of the TRUE master bedroom before:

Random dog crate from when Lola was still acting like a puppy and wouldn’t stop taking my tools!

Our walls were green and our carpet was brown (and nasty), so I ripped apart the entire room this past November to install the hardwood flooring I mentioned here. I traded up for hardwood flooring and refreshed the wall color to a light gray. I installed completely new baseboards and quarter rounds and was really happy with the end result.

I just never really got around to redecorating and it has been pretty lame ever since.

The best part about spontaneously switching up my plans is that most of my original planning can definitely be transposed onto the master suite!

So, what do I have in mind?

The following pictures have provided some inspiration for the next six weeks.

I couldn’t find the original source for this picture!
An actual One Room Challenge reveal from the DIY Mommy.

This spring, for the nursery transformation, I really prided myself in building the main feature of the room – the cabin bed. So, this fall, the big question on my mind was, “What in the world was I going to build?

The answer came in the form of the bed, of course – but I plan to put my own little twist on it! I struggle with storage in our room and our current bed doesn’t offer much space beneath it. So, the solution I will be going after is a sneaky storage platform bed.

Another plan from Ana White!

The storage bed will be totally functional! I plan to disguise the drawers beneath an ingenious, removable bed skirt – installed with Velcro so that I can just rip it off and throw it in the wash. That’s what I call a lazy efficient mom hack!

The other part of the equation will be the headboard and which colors I want to bring into it. While it is still up in the air, I am thinking my DIY skills might not be up to creating a curved headboard just yet. I do plan to explore a new tool on that build, though – the router! Also, I have never built drawers… so there will be a whole lot of uncharted territory happening in the upcoming six weeks!

Finally, I might explore removing the pocket hole door from our bathroom and replacing it with a sliding barn door build from Angela Rose Home – it is such a beautiful, modern twist on the farmhouse barn door!

My fave Instagram DIY-er Angela Rose Home. Obsessed with her stories/feed – check her out!

I just need to think through the functionality and style of it.

  • How will I lock it? Toddlers are known to want to form bathroom parties – locks are important!
  • Will there be enough space with the dresser in place?
  • How will I keep with the “Country French” theme but with a bit more of a modern twist?
  • What do I fill in the pocket door space with?
  • Can I learn how to demo a door without causing massive destruction? Probably, but I will need some YouTube help and might even reach out to Angela for this one.

As for the colors, I am such a neutral person, it will probably take me up until the last second to choose – but I tend to lean toward pinks and blues.

Here are the “new” Country French colors from Cedar Hill Farmhouse. What colors would you choose?

While the headboard design and colors are still up in the air, I at least know what the first week will comprise of. It is time to de-junkify the room (you’re right, that’s not a real word). It’s like a way less fun demo day. I will also round up the family and head to Lowe’s to pick out my lumber for the projects.

And, actually, a lot of the first week will be spent in New Mexico! Not really an ideal way to start this challenge off… or is it?

Stay tuned to see the progress – most of the building fun will be shown in my Instagram stories with recaps here on the blog – come join in on the fun with me there!

Until then, here’s to another exciting One Room Challenge adventure! See you soon!
