Welcome back friends! For the 2020 Spring One Room Challenge I am taking on our guest bedroom and bringing it to its full potential by hiding it inside of a home office. Before I was able to really dive back into this project, though, I had wrap up the chicken coop for our brand new chicks! Stick with me as I build or refinish everything in the next few weeks. This week, I share all about the craziest distraction and coolest build I’ve ever tackled – my dream chicken coop! To catch up on where we’ve been already for the guest room, check out the links below:
Start of the Adventure
My husband has been ALL over the idea of getting chickens since we moved to a few acres after we got married. I, on the other hand? Not so much. I was under the impression they would be stinky eye-sores in our back yard not worth the eggs they lay. So, when this pandemic hit, I hesitantly agreed to getting chickens. It would be nice to have eggs even when stores are out, right? My one condition – they needed a cute coop.
I ultimately landed on this beauty as the inspiration. But I couldn’t wait for them to ship me the plans, so instead I decided to just go for it. Applying all of the rough and finish carpentry I’ve learned throughout the past two One Room Challenges, I looked at the picture and got to work.
For the 2019 Spring One Room Challenge, I built my daughter a really cool cabin bed. That was the first lesson I drew on to bring the four main walls to life. Using my fave – Kreg pocket holes – I constructed all four panels to be assembled by screwing them together.
From there we threw up the roof and framed out the run of the coop pulling on skills I had picked up with my dad through a few roofing projects on actual houses.
There were a few new tricks I picked up along this build. I taught myself how to make my own shaker style cabinet doors using only a pocket hole jig and built my very first hinged “human door”! I had built quite a few chicken doors by this point, so the first human one was a milestone.
From there it was time to close it up in the hardware mesh and add all of the little details. It was SO frustrating to be so close and still have so many details left to go. That last 5% ended up taking an entire week. It’s already 90-100 ° here in Texas, so we really were struggling to keep spirits high. Everyone’s beautiful One Room Challenge projects were progressing in my Instagram feed and it was so demoralizing on some days to feel so behind.
But then, guys… it started to come together. And it was G-L-O-R-I-O-U-S.
I swear I should have entered this coop as my dual One Room Challenge entry and done the reveal alongside my guest room – but I didn’t have that kind of time! With the chicks seemingly doubling in size each passing day, this project was weighing on me big time. I needed to focus here so that I could dedicate myself 100% to my ORC room again.
So, note to anyone (and self) – don’t get chicks for the first time three weeks before the start of the One Room Challenge. It will kill you! The lovely ladies are enjoying their newfound space, though. Also, I am beyond proud of this build – I have always built alongside plans. This time, though, I created this from scratch! I hope that, in time, I will be able to pull together a legitimate plan for you guys so you can replicate this if you are the handy type.
So now that the distractions are over and done with, this week I am going to be focusing on finishing up the built-in shelves to complete the look of that wall. Once that is wrapped up, I need to really pick a paint color and will probably be turning to my Instagram friends for help! Come join us!

I love the coop!
Thank you! What an undertaking that was… haha!
That has to be one of the best looking Chicken Coops I have seen. Our neighbors have a chicken coop… kind of plain in comparison. The chickens are surprisingly friendly!
Thank you! Our chickens are a flighty flock – they are pretty scared of us. They are getting much better, but they still scare easy!
Thank you, I am learning lots today and especially about chickens.
I’m still learning about them myself!
Seriously, this is nicer than my first apartment! Fantastic work!
Haha thanks! I was thinking it could have been a she-shed!
Such a great coop! I wish I could have chickens but with my husky it is not a great idea…
Oh I feel you! We have a German Shepherd, Golden Retriever and a Sheltie… plus two cats! Our run is like Fort Knox!
Wow! Great job with this! I am sure your chickens really love it!
Thank you! They do! I am so happy when they use the little ladder I made them – they march home each night at 8:30 p.m. on the dot!
That’s awesome! I’m going to share this with a friend who has chickens. It’s adorable.
Thank you for sharing 🙂 It was a lot of work!
That is a gorgeous coop! So impressed!
Thank you! I am so happy with it – chicken mansion!
That is the most adorable coop ever! How could you not want chickens knowing the would hanging out in there!
Haha! At the time I was NOT picturing this.. but yes, now I am happy having chickens!
You are so amazing! I love your post and pictures that you share you handy work!!
Thank you Holly!
Wow! That is one state-of-the-art chicken coop! I think you have a potential side hustle is you want one.
That is one state-of-the-art chicken coop! I believe you have a potential side hustle if you want one.
I’m working on a plan for this one! I was thinking of making it into an assembly ready kit and selling that – long way from that point, though!
That is a high class coop! Nice job.
Thank you! These chickens have it made 🙂
That chicken coop is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!
Thank you – it was a lot of work!
Those are lucky chickens with the most beautiful coop ever! Great job! Now I’m going to be stalking your ORC project!
Thank you Jen! I am struggling in the ORC department, but this week is going to be the final push to the finish line… if I can make it!
The chicken coop is amazing, wow! My mom would be so jealous, haha. Great job!!
Haha! Thank you – I am glad I went to the effort, I really love it!
That is one fancy chicken condo! You did an amazing job!!
Thank you!
My husband wants chickens and I have fought him, BUT if I could have a gorgeous coop like this I wouldn’t mind having chickens!
Yes, I feel you on that! I had fought it for years… and now they are kind of fun! It is pretty relaxing to watch them free range. No idea why!
That’s the coolest chicken coop!! Great job! You are so handy and talented.
Thank you! It was definitely an adventure!
Impressive! It really turned out great! Well done!
Thank you so much!
What a cool project! I wish I had outdoor space to do something like this. I live in a second floor apartment that doesn’t even have a balcony.
Oh yes chickens would be pretty crazy on that balcony – haha! Although, my husband has a coworker who has a therapy chicken. Yes… a therapy chicken. She has it wear diapers around her house and she sleeps inside with them! Couldn’t even imagine!
What an adorable project! It makes me want to get some chickens!
Thank you – they have been so fun actually!
This is the cutest chicken coop ever!! Well done.
Thank you!
That is seriously so cute!!!! I have my own fantasy of having this someday when I’m in a neighborhood that will allow it.
Thank you so much Shannon! I love it and, most importantly, the ladies love it! They march home each night at 8:30 pm on the dot almost!
That’s the cutest chicken coop I’ve ever seen. I want one…and I don’t even have chickens!
